Finally, summer is upon us. And with it, picnics in the park, backyard cookouts, and—you guessed it—sky-high hydro bills. During the hot summer months, energy bills soar thanks to increased demand put on HVAC systems. This is made worse if you rely on an old, energy-inefficient AC unit.
A poorly maintained AC system can increase your hydro bill by more than 40%. Even worse, a neglected AC unit can cause system failures which require costly technician visits to repair. All the while, your indoor air quality will suffer, and airflow will be stifled.
But don’t fret. Armed with the right know-how, you can protect yourself and your business from unforeseen costs due to a faulty HVAC system. To help save you time and money, we put together this checklist to make sure your HVAC system is ready for the scorching days ahead.
The June Diagnostic
Every June, we recommend doing a full system diagnostic test. Before cleaning its various components, test run the system by turning it on and ensuring that there are no immediately noticeable errors with the start-up or shut-down processes. After a successful start-up, briefly run your thermostat a few degrees higher and lower than usual.
Check the Thermostat
After your first diagnostic test, make sure you ready your thermostat. Typically, thermostats are among the first points of failure in an HVAC system. First, equip the thermostat with fresh batteries and clean any dust that may have accumulated over the winter. Second, ensure that it is well-calibrated by testing its ability to provide accurate temperature readings.
Check the Filter
A dirty filter will do you no good. Every year, we advise replacing the AC filter if you want the best performance out of your system. If neglected, an old AC filter can compromise your unit’s airflow. In which case, your AC will not be running at full capacity and thus, you will find it tough to keep cool.
Clean the Ducts
Idle ducts are prone to dust and grime build-up, which can cause blockages to airflow and sub-standard air quality. To keep your air flowing smoothly, be sure to clear your air ducts at the start of every summer.
Clean the Condenser
Make sure your outdoor or rooftop condenser is clear from debris and dust build-up. Often, vegetation, sticks and stones, and even litter can brush up against your condenser and cause airflow problems. Make sure there’s nothing blocking its air intake.
Schedule Routine Maintenance
Don’t feel like getting your hands dirty? To save time, and to ensure you receive the best value possible, schedule routine professional servicing of your HVAC system. Under a service agreement, licensed technicians will perform full-service diagnostic tests and tune-ups, so you don’t have to.
